Abstract

The contemporary population of the Province of Cauca is the result of the admixture between three parental populations (European, Amerindian and African). Genetic composition was determined in 306 residents of the Province with the use of 34 autosomal markers, 9 markers in chromosome X, 6 and 8 mtDNA in chromosome Y. Autosomal and X chromosome data indicate that both European and Amerindian populations have contributed to a greater extent to the current genetic pool of the population. The mtDNA and the Y chromosome data, indicate a strong sexual bias (asymmetrical gene flow) in the admixing process, where interethnic crosses were mainly between European men and native women.
